Community Activism & New Skills

In between our interviews we have been learning lots of new skills. We learned how to use graphic design to make our calls to action stand out, and we have been using cloth puppets to reflect on our adult discussions to help us decide the most important things we need adults to learn about children’s rights. We have also been exploring jobs people did in the past (including dressing up as milk maids), and practicing for our shadow puppet show, which we will be filming next year. We have been exploring the local area to find the statues of the town’s goat emblem, and we have started work on our professionals’ map of Haddington. We asked our classmates if they would like to change anything about the town and a majority said they wanted something done about the streetlights. Lots of children think the streetlights need to come on earlier in the winter, as they find it quite scary walking home in the dark. The MCPs spoke to their MP for advice and then wrote to East Lothian Council to ask them to change the timing of the lights. The MCPs have become wonderful investigators and fierce champions of both children’s rights and their school communities. The whole Children’s Parliament team are immensely proud of all our MCPs who have worked incredibly hard on our professionals  investigation so far, and we wish everyone a very happy Christmas.
